🇳🇱 Getting Your BSN

Your BSN (Burgerservicenummer) is basically your Dutch personal identification number. You’ll need it for things like getting a job, opening a bank account, sorting out health insurance, and dealing with most Dutch government admin.

The process is pretty straightforward once you know what to do:

1. Register with your municipality (gemeente)

Once you have a place to live in the Netherlands, you need to register with the municipality where you live. Search for your local ‘gemeente’ and book a registration appointment.

2. Bring your documents

What they ask for can vary slightly, but generally you’ll need:

• Your passport/ID
• Proof of your address (usually your rental contract)
• Your birth certificate (depending on your situation/municipality)
• Any residence permit or immigration documents that apply to you

3. Go to your appointment

At the appointment, they’ll register you as living in the Netherlands. They may check your documents and ask a few basic questions about your move.

4. Get your BSN 🎉

Once you’re registered, you’ll receive your BSN. Keep this number somewhere safe!! because you’re going to use it A LOT.

My Tip: Book your municipality appointment as soon as you know where you’ll be living. Dutch admin can involve a lot of waiting, and having your BSN makes everything else way easier.
